How We Test

We design tests to mirror real life: small spaces, noise‑sensitive neighbors, busy schedules, and multi‑cat households. The goal is reliable engagement, safe use, and peaceful rest.

  1. Intake and Categorization
  • Map each toy to prey archetypes (flyer/scurrier/burrower/climber) and intended use (interactive vs. solo)
  • Note materials, refillability/repairability, and recommended age/skill levels
  1. Safety and Materials Screening
  • Check small‑part hazards, cord length, fasteners, dyes, and shedding fibers
  • Stress‑test seams and attachment points; inspect for sharp edges or weak joints
  1. Engagement Trials (Primary Metric)
  • 10–15 minute hunts, 1–2x/day across multiple days
  • Record initiation speed, sustained interest, and end‑of‑hunt satisfaction (settle/sleep)
  • Validate across shy, high‑energy, and senior cats
  1. Noise Evaluation
  • Measure decibels at 1 meter on common surfaces (hard floors, rugs)
  • Assess “quiet mode” configurations and nighttime suitability
  1. Durability Cycles
  • Simulate claw and bite wear with repeated play bouts over weeks
  • Note failure points and availability of refills/repairs
  1. Space and Storage Footprint
  • Measure assembled size, break‑down ease, and storage options for small apartments
  • Evaluate visual clutter and cable management
  1. Ease of Care
  • Cleaning steps, drying time, odor retention
  • Maintenance effort and cost per month (refills, batteries, adhesives)
  1. Multi‑Cat Dynamics
  • Observe resource guarding, ambush potential, and turn‑taking
  • Recommend rotation rules and positioning to reduce conflict

Scoring

  • Engagement (40%)
  • Durability (20%)
  • Noise (15%)
  • Footprint/Storage (15%)
  • Safety/Materials (10%) We also note value and use‑case fit (e.g., shy‑cat confidence, nighttime quiet play).

Documentation and Updates

  • Photo/video logs, decibel snapshots, and failure notes
  • Update records when manufacturers change components
  • Sunset or downgrade ratings if long‑term performance drops

Limitations and Bias Controls

  • Cats are individuals; we test across profiles to reduce bias but cannot predict every cat
  • Not a lab—real‑home contexts intentionally add variability
  • We disclose samples and conflicts; affiliate revenue never changes scores

Safety First Always supervise interactive play. Retire damaged toys, store strings/wands safely, and end hunts with food and rest.
